Finishing Options
Foil Tooling & Titling
Foil titling is used to add clear lettering to the spine or cover, giving the binding a defined and professional finish.
Foil tooling is where patterns using hand tools are designed to create premium and unique appearances.
Blind Tooling
Blind tooling creates impressed decoration without foil, adding detail and texture in a more restrained manner.
Raised Bands
Raised bands shape the spine with a more traditional profile, adding structure and visual definition to the binding. Generally this is by using cords as sewing supports or cosmetically before casing in.
Hand-Sewn Endbands
Hand-sewn endbands provide a more traditional finish at the head and tail of the spine, adding both decorative detail and a stronger handbound character.
Ribbon Markers
Ribbon markers are added as a practical finishing feature, offering a simple and elegant way to mark a place within the text.
Decorative Endpapers
Endpapers may be selected in plain, coloured, marbled, or decorative papers to suit the style of the binding. Client-supplied papers or printed artistic designs may also be used where appropriate to give the book a more personal finish.
Covering Materials
A range of covering materials may be used depending on the project, including cloth, buckram, and leather, each offering a distinct finish and character.
Spine Labels
Spine labels provide a traditional field for titling, adding clarity and contrast to the finished binding.
Edge Gilding
Edge gilding applies a metallic finish to the edges of the text block, creating a more decorative and elevated presentation in the traditional style.
This additional process also protects the book from dust and moisture, while aiding in prevention of page degradation.
Boxes and Slipcases
Custom boxes and slipcases may be made to house and protect a finished volume, providing an added level of presentation, storage, and long-term protection.
This is ideal for conservation or archival purposes.
