FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a ready-made book and a custom book?
Ready-made books are already designed and made, then listed for sale as finished pieces. Custom books are made to order and can involve selected materials, formats, finishes, personalisation, or other project-specific details.
Are your ready-made books one of a kind?
Many ready-made books are one-off pieces or produced in very small batches.
How quickly are ready-made books dispatched?
Ready-made books are generally the quickest items to leave the studio. Dispatch time will be listed on the product page, but please allow a short handling period as all orders are packed by hand.
Can a ready-made book be personalised?
Selected ready-made books may be available with initials, names, or simple finishing options. Where personalisation is available, any added turnaround time will be noted before checkout.
Will my book look exactly like the photos?
Each book is made and finished by hand, so slight variation can occur in grain, tone, placement, impression depth, and other small details. These are part of the nature of handbound work rather than faults.
What materials do you use?
Materials vary by project and listing, but may include bookcloth, leather, decorative papers, archival adhesives, and quality writing or drawing papers. Where a material is central to the piece, it will usually be described in the product listing or quote.
Do you offer lined, blank, or other page styles?
Page styles depend on the book. Some books are made with blank pages, while others may be lined, plain, or otherwise specified in the listing or quote.
How do custom orders work?
Custom work begins with a discussion of the size, structure, materials, finish, and intended use of the book. Once the scope is confirmed, production proceeds according to the agreed specifications and timeframe.
What can I customise?
Depending on the project, customisation may include size, cover materials, colour palette, page style, endpapers, titling, initials, simple personalisation, and selected finishing details. Some structures or materials may not suit every project.
Will I receive a proof before production begins?
For projects involving stamped names, cover text, supplied wording, or visual layout decisions, a confirmation of specifications and/or proof may be provided before work begins. Work proceeds on the basis of the details approved by you.
How long does a custom book take?
Custom work takes longer than ready-made stock, as each project is made to order. Timeframes depend on the complexity of the binding, the materials required, current studio workload, and whether you need personalisation or supplied content incorporated.
Can you rush a custom order?
Rush work may be possible depending on the project and current schedule. If you have a firm deadline, it is best to ask before ordering.
Rush work will incur up to a 50% increase in costings.
Can I supply my own text, artwork, or files?
Yes, where the project requires it. Please ensure all names, spelling, wording, dates, and supplied files are final and correct, and that you have permission to use any text, images, or artwork you provide.
Can changes be made after I approve the details?
Changes may still be possible before production begins, but they can affect timing and cost. Once materials are cut, personalised, or committed to the job, changes may be limited.
Can you match a specific colour or material exactly?
I can work toward a close and considered match, but exact replication is not always possible due to the nature of hand-applied finishes, natural materials, and supplier variation.
Are custom or personalised books returnable?
Custom and personalised work is generally not eligible for change-of-mind returns, as it is made specifically for you.
Can I return a ready-made book if I change my mind?
Ready-made books may be eligible for return in line with the studio’s returns policy, provided they are unused and returned in original condition within the stated timeframe. Personalised, altered, or custom-made items are usually excluded from change-of-mind returns.
What if my order arrives damaged or incorrect?
Please make contact as soon as possible if your order arrives damaged, faulty, or not as described.
Do you make books for gifts, events, or special commissions?
Yes. Custom books can be made for gifts, personal milestones, collections, guest books, presentation pieces, or other special purposes, depending on the scope of the work.
How should I care for my book?
Books are best kept in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Handle them with clean hands and avoid overfilling, bending, or forcing them beyond their natural opening.
Do you offer large runs or wholesale quantities?
Small batches may be possible depending on the format and timeline. Larger quantities are considered on a case-by-case basis.
