About Walker Book Works

Walker Book Works was founded by Ethan Walker, whose background in librarianship and archival work continues to shape the bindery’s approach. Working closely with collections gave rise to a lasting interest in the physical life of books — how they are made, how they age, and how they can be repaired with care.

That interest grew into a hands-on bookbinding practice focused on repair, rebinding, and well-made books. Each project is approached with attention to structure, material, and finish - Ethan has also completed repair workshops and training specifically towards cloth and leather bindings and continues to improve their skill set.

Approach

Each project is assessed individually.

Repairs are carried out with a focus on:

• Retaining as much of the original structure as possible

• Using complementary materials that match the weight, tone, and function of the original

• Applying reversible, conservation-aligned techniques where appropriate

• Avoiding unnecessary replacement or over-restoration

Where full rebinding is required, traditional structures are used to ensure durability and usability.

All work is completed by hand using traditional tools and small-scale equipment.

Walker Book Works exists to provide a practical, long-term approach to book care — whether for everyday reading copies, academic work, or personal collections.

Based in regional New South Wales, Walker Book Works services local clients as well as interstate work via post.
